Amidst all the complaints about the mindset of San Antonio (i.e. it’s not progressive enough), it’s easy to complain especially when you don’t know why. I’ve taken some time, met with some people, and I’m getting closer to that answer.

San Antonio vs. Austin: My $0.02

Note: This is pretty long, so I encourage skimming.
I admit I have a love for seeing cities develop. Urban planning and development is definitely a “lame” hobby of mine and I could read about freeways and such forever. It’s one of the reasons I try to be so involved in my community.
In Houston, though I didn’t really see it, there was an apparent rivalry with Dallas. Austin was sometimes acknowledged, San Antonio generally ignored but respected. Here, San Antonio and Austin are developing a sort of rivalry that hinges from mutual respect to flat-out disgust. Since most opinions I see are way too unilateral or soaked with vitriol, or they overlook potential concerns for Black Americans, I’d try to put a most objective analysis.
That said, I’m obviously biased to liking and preferring San Antonio. There are a few reasons for this which I’ll probably get into later. I had always considered a move to Austin while I was living in Houston, but that never panned out for reasons I’ll touch on later. (more…)

Update on postal mania

Apparently paying overnight postage isn’t enough to convince the US Postal Service to deliver my mail-in ballot application on time, but can deliver a regular letter from Bexar County in three days. Had I known that, I wouldn’t have paid $0.42 to let the county tell me my application is defective.
